How is it that fish nets catch all one breed of fish or crustaceans?
You would think that all sorts of things would get caught in those things right?
I know thats a very blond question but I always wondered that!
Bycatch is the word for the “collateral damage” commercial fishermen do. And there’s a lot of it, but the commercial guys don’t talk about it much.
Gillnets were banned in California back in 1990, one reason was the fishermen were throwing away something like 70% of the fish they caught — dead — because they were unsellable, or worse, undersized or otherwise protected. Purse seines used to wrap schools of tuna catch whatever is mixed with the tuna — whether it be lower-grade tuna (skipjack) or dolphins or sharks or whatever. By the time the fish are on board, they’ve suffocated in the net, and if dolphins are wrapped with the tuna, they drown. Trawlers which drag the bottom for bottom fish catch not only the targeted fish or shrimp or whatever, but whatever other stuff is down there… PLUS they tend to destroy the bottom structure. Longlines, with dozens or hundreds of baited hooks on a main line which can stretch for miles, kill everything from sharks to turtles along with the tuna they target.
The only way to really eliminate bycatch is to catch the fish one at a time, and release the unwanted ones. Commercial fishermen, in general, don’t do that. They want to catch a lot of fish, and one-at-a-time doesn’t cut it for them. So they just dump the bycatch at sea and the crabs on the bottom have a feast, then they hit the dock with a boatload of the targeted species and people think that’s all they caught.
And every year there are fewer fish in the ocean.
